Motivational speaker Scott Lang spoke to the members of the Mira Costa marching band on Saturday, April 18 from 10am-1pm in an effort to teach the students about leadership in band.

Leadership Success LIVE!, an interactive workshop created by Scott Lang, explores the world of student leadership with music, in which students learn about achieving their personal potential. He was invited to speak to the members of marching band about the importance of band and leadership.

“I became a motivational speaker because I wanted to match my culture with my passion,” Scott Lang said. “My culture is band, and my passion is speaking to students, so I decided to become a motivational speaker for band students.”

This workshop was created to enhance the students’ band experiences. His speeches were mainly about the importance of teamwork and how a leader should act with the traits of a leader.

“Scott Lang has a unique perspective,” band director Joel Carlson said. “He really changed the way this band thinks.”

Scott Lang gave two speeches to the marching band members. The first was an introductory speech that included background information about the start of his career. The second speech was about the benefits of being a member of the band program.

“He taught students how to become better people as well as musicians,” sophomore saxophonist Sean Syed said. “It was really moving.”

He spoke for most of the three hours of the workshop about the importance of band and leadership. However, he asked and answered questions at certain points in his speech.

“Honestly, he caught me off guard,” sophomore flautist Emily Chase said. “He’s a really amazing and passionate person.”

Mira Costa and Palisades Charter High Schools spilt the cost of the leadership clinic. Costa paid $1500.

“He really emphasized that he couldn’t teach us what or how to think,” sophomore clarinetist Lauren Koch said. ” He really challenged us to claim our potential of becoming a leader.”
