Senior Canyon Crespo, also known as “Lil Can” has made a name for himself throughout Mira Costa High school for his original songs he posts on Soundcloud.
Crespo first started making music in April of 2018 when he released his first and most popular song “I Been.” “I Been” recieved over 18,000 views on Soundcloud, which inspired him to continue writing and releasing music.
“Back in April I went through a kind of sad phase,” Crespo said. “I found that writing music was a good was to express myself and let everything out.”
After releasing “I Been” in April, Crespo released three other songs including “Flexin’,” “Alec Feng,” and “You Make Me.” “Flexin” was not written about anything specific, he just wrote whatever came to his mind. “Alec Feng” was written about Crespo’s friend, Alec Feng. “You Make Me” was inspired by and written for his ex-girlfriend.
“I wrote ‘You Make Me’ while I was with my ex-girlfriend a couple months ago,” Crespo said. “Unfortunately we broke up a little while after the song was released, but I still enjoy the song.”
According to Crespo, alll of his songs were written and recorded in his bedroom with just a pair of headphones. His writing process is fairly simple: he starts by brainstorming what he wants to write about and then picks a beat off YouTube and adds words on top of the beat.
“Most of the time it’s hard for me to actually write songs,” Canyon said. “But sometimes I get in a mood where I can write songs for hours.”
Crespo is currently writing a new song with producer and song writer, Senior Cole Ficklin. They haven’t come up with a name for the song yet, but it will be released in a couple weeks. For now this is the only project he is working on, according to Crespo.
“I always sent Canyon my work for feedback, so when he started making his own music we knew we had to make a song together,” Ficklin said. “We are still trying to figure out exactly what direction we want to go but we have some solid ideas.”
Crespo started writing songs because of his love for music, so he hopes and plans on continuing making music for fun as long as he can. Crespo’s songs are available on Soundcloud under his username, “Lil Can.”
“Right now I am just writing music for fun and I’m not planning on trying to make it a serious career, but if somehow it takes off I definetly wouldn’t mind,” Crespo said.
