Girls tennis competes in the Point Loma Invitational

Sophomore Lucy Fiorito back to serve. The Girls tennis team competed in the Point Loma Invitational this past weekend.

The girl’s tennis team played at the Point Loma Tennis Invitational on the 28th and 29th at the Barnes Center in San Diego and placed 7th.

“We placed 7th and i think overall it was a fun tournament and a good learning experience for all of us,” said freshman Haily Huynh.

In the first round on the 28th, the Mustangs defeated the Matadors 2-4.  In singles, freshman Haily Huynh won 6-0 and 6-3. In doubles, junior team Audrey Vo and Olga Nagy won 6-0 and 6-0. Sophomore Kacey Feng and freshman Sydney Vo won two sets, scoring 6-4 and 6-0, and sophomore Hannah Bergin with junior Amanda Scott won 6-4 and 6-4.

“San Diego’s competition were one of the best teams we have played. we went up against the number two school in SoCal and it really showed how good we are and how good the other teams were,” Huynh said.

On the 28th, in the next round, the Mustangs lost to the Trojans 1-5.  In doubles, senior Lindsay Giese and sophomore Kacey Feng won all of their sets of doubles, scoring 5-7, 6-3 and 10-7.

“It was a tough weekend with long, deciding matches playing the highest ranked team,” freshman Nicole Wuelfing said.

On the 29th, the Costa team faced Peninsula and finished the game 3-3, with Peninsula winning in the tiebreaker.  In singles, freshman Kiki Daviduk won 6-4 and 6-1. In doubles, junior team Audrey Vo and Olga Nagy won 6-1 and 6-3, and sophomore Kacey Feng and freshman Sydney Vo won 6-1 and 6-2.

“We didn’t do as well as we would have hoped but it was really good competition both days,” senior Kendall Lebins said.

Costa competed against the Dana Hills High School for seventh place, where the Mustangs defeated the Dolphins 4-2.  In singles, freshman Nicole Weulfing won 6-1 and 6-0, and freshman Kiki Daviduk won 6-1 and 7-5.  In doubles, senior team Lindsay Giese and Kendall Lebbins won 6-3 and 6-1, and junior Kacey Feng with sophomore Sydney Vo won 6-2 and 6-4.

“We placed 7th in the san diego tournament which i think is pretty good since there were a lot of really good competitive teams there,” sophomore Kacey Feng said.

The overall Mira Costa record is 10-5, and 1-1 in the Bay League. Their next match is an away game on Oct 3 against Corona Del Mar.

“We are excited to play this match because Corona Del Mar is a really amazing team and I think we have to go out there and play our hardest and best tennis,” said senior Kendall Lebins.

On the 3rd and 4th, the Mira Costa girl’s tennis team lost to Corona Del Mar and won to Redondo.

“Yesterday’s game was not our best. Everyone was not doing their best and didn’t have the ‘drive,’ but Corona del Mar is one of the best teams in SoCal. i think they aren’t better than us but they definitely were better yesterday,” said freshman Haily Hyunh.

The Mustangs lost to Corona del Mar with a score of 3-15. They won no sets in singles.  In doubles, junior team Audrey Vo and Olga Nagy won two sets 6-0 and 7-5, and sophomore team Kacey Feng and Sydney Vo won one set 6-2.

“Corona del mar is a really good team and we just made too many mistakes,” said senior Kendall Lebins.

Costa won to Redondo 16-2. In singles, junior Audrey Vo won one set in first position 6-0, freshman Haily Hyunh won two sets 6-3 and 6-0, and sophomore Sydney Vo won two sets 6-0 and 6-0, and freshman Nicole Wuelfing won two sets 6-2 and 6-1.  In doubles, sophomore Kacey Feng with junior Olga Nagy won one set 6-0, senior Evelyn Le and junior Sydney Miller won two sets 6-2 and 6-0, junior Amanda Scott and sophomore Hannah Bergin won three sets 6-0, 6-3, and 6-1, senior Kendall Lebbins and junior Peyton Douglas won two sets 6-1 and 6-2, and senior Lindsay Giese with freshman Kiki Daviduk won one set 6-0.

“Everyone played well and it was a great win for us for the bay league,” said freshman Haily Huynh.

The Mira Costa Record is 11-6, and 2-1 in Bay League. Their next game is on the 9th against Palos Verdes.

“Palos Verdes  is a really good team and they are ahead of us in the rankings by two spots. We beat them barely last time but they lost a really important player during that match. I am nervous on how we do against Palos Verdes but I know we will try very hard to try and beat them again,” said Huynh.
