The Mustangs competed in the Bay League Finals, where they finished strong with first place wins at Redondo Union High School on Nov. 1.

“The course was very fast,” junior Piper Newton said. “Redondo does a really good job of making it so that bystanders can cheer for their teams at all times. During the race there was a lot of tension between all of the teams, but afterwards everyone was completely friendly with each other.”

Girls Varsity placed first overall and were led by freshman Dalia Frias who placed first with a time of 17:21. Senior Lucy Atkinson placed third with a time of 17:52 and senior Brooke Inouye placed fourth with a time of 17:53.

“As the meet ran later into the night, it got really dark out and some parts of the course had no lights to show the path, so we had to be very careful to not trip or fall over anything.” Inouye said, “It was a pretty challenging race because Palos Verdes and Redondo Union had many solid runners as well so I think the race came down to which team ran the smartest and wanted it more.”

Boys Varsity also placed first overall and was led by Cy Chittenden who placed first with a time of 15:04. Senior Cole Gamble placed sixth with a time of 15:31 and junior Thomas Velvin placed ninth with a time of 15:34.

“The varsity boys knew this was going to be a challenging race, but we still performed very well,” Velvin said. “There were lots of personal bests for everyone on the team.”

The Mustangs will next compete in the California Interscholastic Federation Preliminary on Nov. 10 at the Riverside Gold Course.

“All the teams have been working extremely hard these past few weeks and it was really awesome to see all of everyone’s hard work paying off,” Inouye said “Our team has gotten so much closer these past few weeks and I think it really showed at the race today. We all pushed and pulled each other throughout the race and it was really rewarding to finally win the Bay League.”
