Costa’s Drama and Tech department hosted their eighth annual Holiday Benefit Show on Dec. 4 in the small theater, where approximately 40 students performed holiday songs, dances and skits to raise money for families in need.

Tickets were $5 at the door and all proceeds went to the Richstone Adopt-a-Family program through Costa’s Operation Happiness project. Drama raised  over $800 for the charity through ticket sales and concessions.

“It is an incredible feeling to give back, especially that we as performers get to put on a show and do what we love,” Drama President and senior Sophia Boylan said. “The best part is that we can take our passion and put it towards a greater cause.”

The show opened with juniors Maggie Cubillos, Mary Clare Powell and Olivia Stanley singing a rendition of “Evergreen” by YEBBA. The performances that followed included self-formed groups and school organizations,  including Comedy Sportz and the women’s a capella Coterie choir.

“It was nerve-racking to go first because we wanted to start the show off strong,” Powell said.  “We were shaky in the beginning, but then we got comfortable and put on a good show.”

Groups sang holiday songs, such as “It’s Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas,” “Baby It’s Cold Outside” and “White Christmas.” Boylan and  senior Stephanie Sala closed out the show with an original skit entitled “The Christmas Cadets.”

“It’s fun to come together as a community to celebrate the holidays with the arts,” Sala said.

Auditions for the benefit were open to the entire student body and took place on Nov. 26 in the small theater. In order to maximize the number of performers in the benefit, students formed groups, Boylan said.

“This benefit is great because we are able to pick and choose what we want to do and who we want to do it with,” Powell said. “A lot of performances at Costa aren’t casted by students, so we don’t get the opportunity to do something we love with our friends very often.”
