Senior Olivia Tuffli teaches swim lessons to kids at the the Manhattan Beach Country Club, just like how she was taught when she was a little kid.

Tuffli started swimming when she was four years old. She swam at the Manhattan Beach Country Club when she was little, which led her to find work there. She first started working at the Country Club as a lifeguard when she turned 16 years old.

“My old swim instructor told me there were lifeguard openings when I turned 16,” Tuffli said. “I thought it would be fun since I grew up swimming at the country club.”

Tuffli had to get a lifeguard certification before she could start lifeguarding, and she worked as a lifeguard for a year and a half before she decided to become a swim instructor for kids. At the Country Club, Tuffli teaches mostly teaching younger kids, but it can range anywhere between one year olds to twelve year olds. Tuffli will mostly be teaching private lessons to kids at the club.

“To be a swim instructor, I had to get my water safety instruction and then I had to complete four to seven hours of training before I could start teaching on my own,” Tuffli said. “It was hard work, but hopefully it pays off in the long run.”

Tuffli teaches lessons around three to four days a week. Each lesson is thirty minutes long with each kid, and they will go over the basics of how to swim. Tuffli plans on teaching swim lessons and lifeguarding at the Country Club until she goes off to college. She is excited to start teaching and meet all the kids she will teach, Tuffli said.

“Working at the country club is really nice,” Tuffli said. “Everyone who works there is very friendly and fun and the pay is really good too. It’s a fun job to have and I love meeting all the kids.”
