This thriller film will not fall short from captivating viewers as “Greta” brings stalking to a whole new level.

“Greta” is a psychological thriller film directed by Neil Jordan and is about a girl named Frances, played by Chloe Grace Moretz, who is considered to be ‘too nice for New York’. The story starts off with Frances going out to find the woman, Greta, who left a purse on the subway. Little did Frances know, this was all part of Greta’s inhumane plan.

Greta, played by Isabelle Huppert, will ultimately do anything for Frances’s companionship, even if that means standing outside the restaurant where Frances works for hours just watching her.

Besides the somewhat odd portrayal of the importance of friendship, it is hard to find a life lesson or ‘moral of the story’ within this movie, besides the fact that you should trust your gut to get as far away as possible from psychopaths.

The costume designs, as well as the other aspects of the film, are outdated, as Frances looks like she is wearing elderly clothes trying to pass as street wear. This and other scenes of the movie, such as Greta’s house, made it seem as if the film could’ve taken place decades ago, up until Frances took out her iPhone 7.

Even though “Greta” is advised for audiences who can tolerate horror movies, this film isn’t as gory as most. This may be a result of the classical French music playing throughout the film, even at the most intense parts, which make the overall film more intriguing and unique, and less horrifying.

This may have not been apparent to all viewers, but anyone who has been to New York City would know this wasn’t where the film allegedly took place. There’s nothing wrong with filming scenes of a movie in other places other than where it’s supposed to take place, but when the differences become visible, it can become extremely bothersome. For example, the Subway cars being used were similar with the ones that have been retired from New York City long ago and the housing of the characters are far from typical living situations you’d find in this city.

Overall, the casting of this movie is excellent and manages to add an inspiring female presence. The only men in the film fail to be the hero and Frances’s dad isn’t introduced till way later in the film, which leaves Frances’s fate in the hands of her best friend, making for a shocking plot twist.

‘Greta’ came out on March 1st and is available in local movie theaters such as Arclight in El Segundo.
