Mira Costa girls tennis played the Palos Verdes Sea Kings at Costa on Oct. 10.

The Mustangs were ranked in third place while Palos Verdes was in fourth place. The score was tied 9-9, but in the end the Mustangs came out on top after 7 games.

“Surprisingly we did very well against these teams,” sophomore Haily Huynh said. “They are very good and it was tough last year but i’m really happy we pulled through.”

In the first round of doubles, seniors Hannah Bergin and Kiki Daviduk played with heat against their opponents. Daviduk came in strong with returns in the dead ends of their opponents side and Bergin made long severes to give the ball spin, to make it more difficult for their opponents to receive. Unfortunately, Palos Verdes came back, and the pair lost the match 5-7.

“Going into this match against Palos Verdes we knew we were going to have to come out strong after playing them in the last tournament,” Daviduk said. “Today we played hard and in the end won which was amazing!”

In round 2, Huynh faced off against Palos Verdes’ first-seeded player, and won 6-2. Huynh’s win helped her team’s overall final score to split the tie breaker.

“I think I need to work on staying calm because I think that’s what helped me through this week,” Huynh said. “I want to workout on the side so I will not get injured or be sore for the next day.”

The girls play Peninsula on Oct. 15th.

“I’m excited to play Peninsula again since we beat them in the tournament and since they are ranked one seat higher than us in CIF,” Bergin said. “It will be a lot more exciting since we plan to bring a lot of energy and with having some players back that we were missed playing Palos Verdes.”
