To kick of their season, the Mira Costa Girls Basketball Team competed in the annual Culver City Girls Basketball Tournament from Nov. 20-21, where they fell to Camarillo in the second round, 41-37.

The Mustangs played a total of two teams over the course of two days. Costa played Hamilton High School and Camarillo High School. The girls ended with an overall 1-1 record, losing to Camarillo in the second round with the close score of 41-37.

“The team did a really good job at running plays, playing together, and having high energy throughout the games,” senior Skylar Herdman said. “We were able to get good shots and keep fighting because of this.”

During the first game against Hamilton High School, the Mustangs fought to stay ahead throughout the game. They continued to be aggressive, taking control of the court and forcing the Huskies to stay on defense. The Mustangs came out on top, defeating Hamilton 55-41.

“I think the team played really well together during our first round,” senior Kim Waller said. “We executed the plays well and communicated with each other. We made the most of our free throws which was essential for consistently keeping our lead.”

The girls didn’t stop fighting in the second round and played a close game against Camarillo High School. According to Waller, the Mustangs were forced to stay on defense because the Scorpions did a good job rebounding, which made it hard to keep up because they got more offensive opportunities. As the game went on, the Mustangs began to fall behind, and eventually lost the game 37-41, leaving them with a 1-1 record in the tournament.

“The other team was really aggressive which made it hard to get a good momentum going,” Waller said. “But when we did get momentum, we were very much in the game and shot great! We also communicated better on defense than the night before, we just have to work harder on rebounding.”

The Mustangs, now 1-1, are scheduled to play their next tournament on Dec. 4, where they will compete in the Immaculate Heart Tournament in Providence. According to the Mustangs, the season opener was only the beginning.

“I think we are going to have a great season,” Herdman said. “We are all getting better everyday and I am very confident in our team.”
