Given all that is going on in current events all around the globe, it would be remiss of me to ignore these occurrences and pretend that they are not happening. In these past few weeks, we have seen the widespread effects of coronavirus and the highly necessary efforts people have been going to lessen the risk of contracting and spreading COVID19.

As high school students, we are in a bit of a unique situation. Our school days are structured, times laid out for us to complete tasks, then move on to the next class, rinse and repeat. Although this may seem boring, we can begin to miss the monotony when it is no longer available to us; I know I do.

Everyone is likely feeling disappointment at the cancellation of events, extracurriculars, or activities that they have devoted a great amount of time to. It is heartbreaking, especially for seniors, to know they might not have the chance to show the final product of all of the wonderful work they have been able to accomplish over the years.

For me personally, this disappointment has left me feeling guilty, because I know just how necessary and crucial these cancellations are to protecting the lives of others. However, I know that I can simultaneously be a little sad at the possibility of not being able to participate in all of the events I was looking forward to this year, while still recognizing the deep importance of protecting those who are vulnerable and in a high risk group for getting seriously ill.

Feeling sad at not being able to participate in long-time plans is natural, however. None of us are prioritizing our concert or performance over the lives of countless others who are at risk, because we know that there are some things in life that are more important. But the sting is still there, and I believe that it is all right for all of us to feel that sting.
