With the family member of a Costa football player recently contracting the COVID-19 virus, many of the team’s practices have been either moved or cancelled.

Since practices have started, the football team has been following COVID-19 safety protocols, such as wearing masks and social distancing. Protocols were created with the help of varsity football coaches Don Morrow, Ray Lee, Matt Baker, Cameron Chow, Arnold Dotson and Principal Dr. Ben Dale. In order to continue practicing, all players must always be six feet apart, work with the same coach every practice and sanitize all equipment after use.

“I’ve heard that we are supposed to start the football season sometime in January,” junior Andrew Lovegren says. “We have started practices but not much more than that.”

As many issues regarding scheduling still remain up in the air, players and families do not entirely know how the remainder of the team’s season will play out. Athletes are eager to get back to playing, but first they must focus on how to accommodate the new changes.

“Some practice groups have been getting cancelled lately,” Lovegren says. “I’m not sure which ones; we all have groups that work out at the same time. We only work with one coach, so it’s hard to say.”

Since a possible cure or vaccine for COVID-19 is still up in the air, according to Lovegren, football players and coaches have realized how fast everything can change with the virus. Still, players and coaches are both waiting for more information to find out exactly how this current season will play out.

“I think that as we continue training, things will get better, and we will be able to practice more and be able to prepare for the season if COVID-19 slows down,” sophomore Cooper Joseph said. “I’m just [excited] to play and get on with [the season].”
