With nearly two decades of lacrosse experience, Maddy Morrissey-Buss is the new head coach for Costa girls lacrosse. Morrissey-Buss played Division 1 lacrosse at Duke University for four years, and was a starting midfielder for three of them. She graduated from Duke ranking 21st all-time in goals and 22nd all-time in assists.

Morrissey-Buss’s past coaching experience includes coaching for Elon University, the Santa Monica Dragons and Harlem Lacrosse Club and she is currently the director of South Bay Lacrosse Club. According to Morrissey-Buss, watching a player’s speed and athleticism pay off in a game is one of her favorite parts of both playing and coaching lacrosse.

“Making a really good catch on the run and then scoring or beating someone in the midfield was always my favorite part,” Morrissey-Buss said. “If I see a defender catch up to someone because they’re really fast, or generally any really amazing show of athleticism, that’s probably my favorite thing.”

According to Morrissey-Buss, she strives for her coaching style to be a combination of the best from the people she loves, including her past coaches as well as her coaching role model, Coach Mike Krzyzewski, the men’s basketball coach at Duke University. Morrissey-Buss aims to connect with her players and have fun playing lacrosse.

“Because I have younger siblings, I can relate to [the players] well, and I know what stressors [they] are going through,” Morrissey-Buss said. “I try not to micromanage and let the players just play.”

Morrissey-Buss hopes to start traditions and create a lasting legacy within the program. She is looking forward to putting Costa girls lacrosse on the map, not just in Southern California, but throughout the entire West Coast.

“I hope to make a really cohesive lacrosse family between both JV and Varsity,” Morrissey-Buss said. “I hope to look back in ten years and see that the girls are still doing the same traditions we started now.”
