Mira Costa tennis creates a frosh-soph team for the first time.

The team is made up of nine players, with five freshmen, two sophomores and one junior. With so many girls trying out for the tennis team, the coaches decided that creating a frosh-soph team would be beneficial to the program.

“I really hate cutting people, and want to see if they put in the hard work and dedication,” Varsity coach Allen Yap said. “They could be a part of a great tennis program.”

Yap decided to create the team in order to give girls on the frosh team an opportunity to experience girls tennis at a high school level, and to play some of Costa’s rival schools.

“Our toughest rival, Peninsula, has a frosh team and suggested that if we create a frosh team, we could play them to get match experience,” Yap said. “This is just an experiment at this point, but let’s see what happens.”

According to Yap, integrating the frosh team into the Costa tennis program has been a success so far, and girls playing on the frosh team have been steadily improving.

“We have a large contingent of girls… some have only played for a short time but have an athleticism that could translate to good tennis if they were in the right environment,” Yap said. “I wanted to give those players a year or two to get good enough to make JV.”
