Costa dance team hosted its annual Lip Sync competition in the auditorium on Nov. 18 from 7 to 9 p.m.

The competition included more than 100 student participants, each of whom were part of a group representing a club, elective or class.

Senior Kirra Troeger delivered a solo performance in honor of her father Stephens, who passed away, and won the “Most Creative” award. Students competed against each other as representatives of their organization. Three gift cards were given to the first, second, and third-place winners of the competition.

“For Advanced Drama, we came up with our themes based off each others’ suggestions, and for Comedy Sportz, we’ve had the idea for ‘Night at the Museum’ for a few years, so we were excited to finally do it,” said senior Dylan Kircher.

Kircher and Erica Boylan were the hosts of the event. Costa employed three judges, who scored each group and determined the winners in each category.

“It was great to be back on stage,” said Kircher. “Lip Sync is one of my favorite Costa events, so I was so excited to be a part of it and host it this year with Erica Boylan.”.

After all the groups performed, the judges declared the winning group to be Advanced Drama. The Comedy Sportz team received second place, and ASB won third place. Advanced Drama received the “Best Choreography” award, while ASB received an award for costume design, which featured a “jailbreak” theme.

“It felt unreal winning first place,” Kircher said. “After competing in Lip Sync for three years and never coming out on top, it was a truly awesome feeling. I’m so happy to have won alongside my best friends.”

The event maintained COVID-19 safety by requiring attendees to wear masks and show proof of vaccination or a negative PCR test. Additionally, all performers wore clear masks to preserve the visual effect of the routines.

“Being in Drama definitely helps with being on stage and performing,” Kircher said. “The Drama Department offers many performance opportunities, which helped me not be too nervous.”

Attendees of the event were charged $8 to enter at the door, while tickets purchased in advance cost $5. All proceeds from the event went toward funding Costa’s dance team.

“We won $50 for coming in third place and are planning on buying food from California Pizza Kitchen or Raising Caines, sort of like a big group pot luck purchased with our winnings,” ASB member Clay Gerrans said.

According to Kircher, lip sync routines take extensive preparation and require multiple rehearsals to develop for the performance.

“We prepared for our acts at Fifth Row dance studio,” Kircher said. “We rehearsed on the weekends for about five days, two hours each.”

Many Costa clubs and organizations view the Lip Sync competition as a bonding event, according to Gerrans. The time spent working together on the routine, he says, makes winning even more meaningful.

“For a month straight, basically every class period we would break into groups and have people make dances and then teach them to the class,” Gerrans said.
