On Tuesday, Sept 29, girls tennis beat Santa Monica High School, 13-5. After losing to Palos Verdes High School on Tuesday, the Mustangs won their first Bay League match against Santa Monica High School.  Their record now being  4-8 as they head into the second half of their season.

“Our match against SAMO was a great win for Costa,” junior Ashna Patel said. “It is always so fun to play and cheer on my teammates.”

The past weekend the team attended the Point Loma Tennis Invitational Tournament where they placed 8th. Sophomore Alisa Lanksy took a break from singles the second half of the tournament, playing doubles with junior Skyla Kallis.

“Spending time together off the court was the best part of the tournament because even though we get to see each other every day, it’s mostly at practice and school,” junior Ava Nicols said. “I loved how we stayed supportive of each other all the way until the last round and cheered from the sidelines during every match.”

Lansky’s wrist affected her performance during the tournament during some of her harder matches, however she battled through it and returned to back to singles. Lanksy won all 3 of her matches against SAMO.

“I was nervous to play singles again after Point Loma, especially against SAMO’s number 1 because she gave me a hard time last year,” Lanksy said. “When I went on the court, I was able to forget about everything and just play my best and do whatever I could to win. I will do anything to win for my team.”

Doubles contributed to Costa’s win, dominating 8 out of their 9 matches. According to senior Chanelle Kazamek and junior Ashna Patel, this match was really good for the team after having a few losses in a row.

“There are a lot of strong teams in the South Bay this year but Costa has continued to put in 100% effort,” Patel said. “This past match against SAMO was a great example of how our effort resulted in a win.”

According to junior Skyla Kallis, the Mustangs need to win at least half of their next matches in order to enter the postseason. The Mustangs will play Culver City High School next, at home on Tuesday.

“We’ve improved a lot as a team since our first match against Westlake,” junior Lily Mitchell said. “If we continue to train hard and support each other, I know we will have a positive outcome on Tuesday against Culver.”
