On Oct. 29, girls volleyball defeated one of their biggest competitors, Mater Dei High School, in the semifinals of CIF. The Mustangs remain undefeated, celebrating another victory after the grueling five set match.

The Mustangs had a close first set, but ultimately won 25-23. According to senior outside hitter Drew Wright, the Mustangs started off with strong defense and a supportive bench. “We had really good defense,” Wright said. “Our bench was definitely a huge aspect of this win.”

According to sophomore Taylor Deckert, the Mustangs kept pushing in the second set. Although it didn’t feel great, it led them to another win 25-20.

“Our head coach, Cam, always says that it’s not going to feel good all the time,” Deckert said. “However, we have to continue to do what’s working.”

Going into the third and fourth set, the Mustang’s winning streak was put on hold. According to Deckert, the Monarch’s intense service pressure stumped the team. Mater Dei would take the third and fourth set 25-20 and 25-22.

“Mater Dei is a very good team, and their height sometimes overpowers us at the net,” Deckert said. “They caught us in the third and fourth set after we had thought we got them in three.”

According to Wright, the Mustangs were able to pick themselves back up and power through the final set. The players used a method Coach Cam taught them: take six deep breaths and bring yourself into the “warrior zone.” While in the “warrior zone,” the Mustangs were able to steal the final set 15-11.

“We came together as a team,” Wrought said. “We let go of all our fear and played for each other.”

Next, Costa will face Sierra Canyon at Cerritos College in the CIF Southern Section Finals. The game will be held on Nov. 5 at 7pm.

“In the next game, we hope to let loose,” Wright said. “We want to play calmly even with our adrenaline through the roof.”
