On Nov. 5, girls volleyball faced Sierra Canyon High School at Cerritos College in the CIF finals. Although they never stopped fighting, the Mustangs lost in a trailing three set match.

The first set showed the Mustangs that this was not going to be an easy battle. According to senior outside hitter Ameena Campbell, every point the Mustangs got, for 13 points in a row, the Trailblazers would steal it back. The Trailblazers were finally able to take the lead, ending the first set in overtime, 28-26.

“We played well, but Sierra Canyon just played better,” Campbell said. “We got in our own heads and made mistakes that cost us the game.”

According to Campbell, the second set was similar to that of the first. Both teams would bounce back and forth between leads, however Sierra Canyon was able to hold this lead longer than Costa. The Mustangs were never far behind, but ultimately lost the set 25-23.

“We should have had a different mindset,” Campbell said. “Everyone seemed nervous and I think that showed. However, we still played well and fought hard.”

Even after losing the first two sets, the Mustangs stayed resilient and never got too far behind. According to Campbell, the unforced errors the Mustangs made kept them away from victory.

The Trailblazers put an end to the battle, finishing off the third set, 25-23. Despite the loss, the Mustangs are able to look back on how far they came in CIF.

“The bench was energetic and supportive the whole match,” Campbell said. “Our serving was also strong, as we hit targets that benefited us.”

The Mustangs ended CIF in second place. However, their journey is far from over, as they will now continue on to state. The next game will be on Nov. 9 at home against Newport Harbour.

“Our goal is to win,” Campbell said. “We want to prove that we are champions.”
