Isabella speaks on the importance of elections this season

Written by: Isabella Montenegro – Editor in Chief

As many of you may know, midterm elections of 2022 have just occurred. While this may come
across as ironic because I am not eligible to vote, I believe that this is the perfect opportunity to
speak on the significance of voting. As many high school students are not eligible to vote yet or
obviously have not even taken a government course, I think a crash course of the elections that
occurred would suffice. Biyearly congressional, state, and local elections took place in 2022.
One thing high school students can do to take action is to pre-register when you turn 16 years
old. This way, teens have no excuse to not vote when they become eligible and voting season
approaches.
You may ask why these specific elections are important. A third of the 100 senate seats are up
for grabs and, in theory, those who control the House and Senate control the agenda. Voting
has had a stigma in history. Many teens often wonder if their vote really has an effect. This
question is a real concern for the bigger presidential elections, as we use the electoral college
system. Whether or not you agree with that system, that’s for another ed note issue. The answer
to all is yes. As citizens, we live in a time of real divide, and this is just one of the ways our
country allows us to have somewhat of a say.
Research demonstrates that in the past, young citizens are the ones who fall short in
elections. There are many valid reasons for this, but I believe that it is our duty as American
citizens to participate. So many protests have arisen, and it’s crucial to vote. As votes were
counted this week and last, we have seen an influx of Gen Z voters boosting up candidates. In
conclusion, I want to reiterate the importance of students taking action and making informative
decisions regarding voting for all future elections
