Girls volleyball wins Molten Tournament, beating Marymount, 2-0, in championship match

Mira Costa, ranked second nationally, beat Marymount High School Saturday, 2-0, to win the Redondo-Costa Molten Tournament at Mira Costa. Costa was led by tournament MVP ‘s Charlie Fuerbringer, Bryn Shankle, and Audrey Flanagan, who helped Costa go undefeated in the tournament, winning all seven games.

Costa beat Marymount, 25-12, in game one of the championship match and 25-13 in game 2. Shankle said that their determination helped push them to victory.

“We had to put in our best effort to stay energetic after a long day of playing. We knew from the start we deserved to win, so we played like it. We didn’t cruise through the game and assume we where going to win. We took charge and shut down the big players,” said Shankle.

Prior to the Molten Tournament, Costa beat Palos Verdes, 3-2, Oct. 3 and Santa Monica, 3-0, Oct. 5. Against rival PV, the Mustangs came out strong winning the first set 25-21. The second and third set Palos Verdes had a comeback and beat the Mustangs 25-252 and 25-19. The Mustangs got back into the game and won the next  two sets to win the tournament.

 Sophomore Flanagan and senior Shankle led the attack in the game. With 23 kills from Flanagan, she was one of the star attacking players in this match.  Alongside Flanagan, Shankle was another star attacking player with a kill number of 10. 

 Mira Costa (34-2  overall, 9-0 in Bay League) celebrated senior night on Monday but scores were not available at the time of publication. Its next game is Thursday at Redondo (21-11, 6-3) at 7:30 p.m. before beginning CIF playoffs Monday.
