The Mustangs took on Yucaipa High School in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Playoffs to keep their season alive. Costa took home their 4th straight win this Friday, beating the Thunderbirds 28-13 thanks to a spectacular 3 touchdown performance by Charlie O’Connor. The Thunderbirds offense put the pressure on the Mustangs as they tied the game at 7 off deep run, but Costa responded quickly by a long passing touchdown from Quarterback Nico De La Cruz to shut Yucaipa down.

Senior wide receiver Charlie O’Connor on how the Mustangs prepared for their first playoff game, “Really efficient week through practice splitting up the defense and the offense to really tone on our game plan on both sides of the ball.”

The Mustangs have been hot as of late with the Mustang offense being very successful in the air with Junior Quarterback Nico De La Cruz throwing for 335 yards and running backs Maddie Miller and AJ Mcbean rushing for 111 yards.

“After our tight loss to PV week 7 we knew we had it in us to win, we just needed to turn something around.” Said Sophomore Linebacker Jackie Reach. “Every game from there on had become a playoff mindset of win or go home.”

Costa advances into the second round of the division 6 CIF Southern Section playoffs taking on Cypress High School with a chance to move onto the semi-finals. You can catch the Mustangs at home at 7pm Friday at Waller Stadium.
