This year’s spirit themes left much to be desired. Spirit week is meant to build enthusiasm for our annual homecoming game and dance, encouraging all students at Costa to participate and dress up, elevating our school spirit. Unfortunately, this year lacked participation as most students only joined in because of their sports coaches requirements, leaving many with minimal excitement and arriving with no effort.

Mira Costa’s spirit week, running from October 23rd to October 27th, is a cherished tradition. It’s a time when students engage in themed dress-up days to showcase their school pride, leading up to the annual football game and dance. It’s an opportunity moment for students to show off their school spirit and celebrate their school. The week is a crucial period as students usually go all out and have fun, while spreading excitement for the game against against our opponent school, Redondo Union Highschool.

However, the student body can’t lie when it comes to the Adam Sandler theme. As a whole, the students loved it and it was the most participated theme. Many students regarded Monday’s theme as the only good dress-up day, especially because it was the only new one this year. Lots of students took part in posting pictures and videos on Snapchat and TikTok to document their participation.

Speaking of the recurrent Tailgate Tuesday, it’s grown somewhat stale over the years. While sporting jerseys and athletic wear can be fun, the annual repetition diminishes its appeal. Moreover, it alienates students less inclined toward sports, leaving them feeling excluded. To ensure inclusivity, this day should feature an alternative theme alongside the sports-centric one.

Moving on to Wednesday’s theme—“on Wednesdays we wear pink.” Sure, it’s a nod to the iconic movie “Mean Girls,” catchy as it may be. However, its recurrence in Spirit Week over several years breeds a sense of repetition. Lack of originality dampens enthusiasm among the students, especially when dressing up isn’t mandatory. A fresh iconic line from another movie could inject new life into this day.

The “Hoe Down Throw Down” on Thursday felt like another recycled theme. While there’s a big population of country-music lovers, the theme is overplayed and not new. Incorporating new themes, like Adam Sandler day, innovates excitement and encourages widespread participation, vital for keeping Spirit Week dynamic.

Lastly, the Redondo Nerd Friday caps off the week. While dressing up as nerds taps into our playful side and challenges our rival, Redondo Union, the theme has grown tired. Recycled themes lose their edge over time, and this one no longer presents a competitive advantage but rather showcases a lack of fresh ideas.

Spirit Week shouldn’t solely rely on promotion by ASB and sports teams. The buzz surrounding Adam Sandler day proved that incorporating new themes can bring participation to Spirit Week and make it into an engaging event without being forced by coaches. It’s evident in the students’ enthusiasm for innovative themes that Spirit Week has the potential to become a celebrated school-wide sensation with robust support.
