MBCC honors local Students of the Month at luncheon

On Jan 18. at 11:30 am, the Manhattan Beach Coordinating Council (MBCC) hosted a Luncheon at AdventurePlex to honor students from Mira Costa, MBMS, and American Martyrs.

The Luncheon began with an introduction from Opportunity Drawing/Programs Director Traci Horowitz and MBCC honors local Students of the Month at luncheon the honoring of American Martyrs students Elise Myers, Blaise Gaydosh, and Brooklyn Miller. Several teachers spoke on each of the student’s academic achievements, and each student received awards on behalf of the city, state senator, and MBCC. Students from each school also gave reports on past and upcoming events.

“I want to acknowledge all of the work that [the MBCC] does for all of our students and for our community,” said Horowitz. “I love the long-standing tradition of the Coordinating Council. It’s the second oldest philanthropy in Manhattan Beach, along with our partnerships with our schools, community, and local businesses.”

Manhattan Beach Middle School Science teacher Tanya Sanchez presented the award for MBMS Student of the Month to Emily Becker. Following, Mira Costa senior Ella Interian and sophomore Riley Jacobson gave reports on recent events at Mira Costa. Then, Costa Vice Principal Kimberly Price introduced senior Ava Nicols.

“Mira Costa is proud to recognize her, as she possesses all the qualities and attributes that the [MBCC] seeks to acknowledge,” said Price. “Ava has stood out as a dedicated and versatile writer. This year, Ava has served as a guide and mentor to other aspiring writers on our campus as an Editor-in-Chief of La Vista.”

A raffle was conducted with prizes, including emergency kits, Lakers goodie bags, gift items at local shops, and much more. All proceeds from luncheons in November, January, March, and April go towards scholarships given out in May.

“We couldn’t do this without [our sponsors],” said Horowitz. “Every dollar donated goes back into the scholarships we give our Mira Costa seniors in May.”
