On January 10, 2024, a senior Redondo Beach Union High School juvenile motorcyclist was killed at the intersection of Carnelian Street and PCH around 2:20 after school.

The juvenile victim was traveling southbound on PCH, when an at-fault sedan made a westbound turn onto Carnelian and hit the male. According to the Redondo Beach Police Department (RBPD) , arriving officers found him unresponsive just minutes after, although he was transferred to a nearby hospital where he passed away shortly after.

“Due to his age, the boy’s identity will not be released,” said RBPD LT. Corey King in a statement, reporting “the driver of the car, identified as an adult woman, remained at the scene and cooperated with police.”

According to the victim’s family, he was on his way with friend Tyler Olson to Palos Verdes when the crash occurred. The victim was known around the community as an avid lover of motorcycling, had a vibrant personality, and was a promising student with plans to study engineering in college.

“His laugh, his smile, just everything about him. There is nothing that I won’t miss,” said Olson, “I saw everything. It was tough.”

This incident underscores the critical need for heightened awareness regarding bike, motorcycle, and road safety among all individuals navigating the roads in the South Bay. It serves as a solemn reminder that even when one vehicle diligently follows safety measures, their well-being can be jeopardized by others on the road.

“The number one thing you can do is stay alert,” Los Angeles Police Department Chief Michel Moore said, “whether you’re walking, biking, or driving. Pay attention to your surroundings, obey traffic laws, and avoid distractions. It’s crucial for everyone on the road to prioritize safety, as these accidents are not just statistics—they represent real lives lost and families affected. By being vigilant and responsible, we can work towards reducing the alarming number of collisions and saving lives in our community.”
