La Vista’s take on trendy water bottles through the years

By Charlotte Levy

La Vista

Every year it seems there is a new water bottle craze. Each claims to be the best: the best temperature-preserving abilities, the best design, and the best practicality. La Vista took all of these aspects into consideration to evaluate the most popular bottles.

S’well

To start, let’s discuss the bottle that had elementary schoolers and their moms in a chokehold in 2017: the S’well bottle. The standard seventeen-ounce bottle retails at $35. S’well bottles store cold beverages for up to 36 hours and warm beverages for up to 18 hours. The S’well has a sleek and thin design that makes it portable and the perfect size for cup-holders and backpack sleeves.

The S’well bottle comes in a variety of colors and designs, such as marble, wood grain, and polka dots to name a few. However, in comparison to the other brands, S’well seems to lack design creativity. Another con is S’well bottles are hand-wash only, a minor inconvenience that may make the product unsuitable for customers who don’t have the time or energy at the end of their day to hand-wash dishes.

HydroFlask

Although it was created in 2009, the Hydro Flask did not gain popularity until 2019: the summer of VSCO girls. Every teenage girl that summer was seen carrying around a Hydro Flask adorned with stickers and friendship bracelets. The Hydro Flask was a step up from the S’well bottle, with the option to purchase a straw cap that provides easy drinking access and a convenient handle that allows for accessorization. The standard 18-ounce bottle retails for $29.95, about $5 less than S’well even with the additional ounce of storage.

The Hydro Flask is more practical than the S’well for someone who is on the go with its portable features like the handle and straw. Despite its convenience for customers who enjoy outdoor recreation, the Hydro Flask promises slightly less than S’well in regards to its temperature-preserving abilities. It claims to keep beverages cold for 24 hours and hot for 12 hours.

Stanley

Finally, we will discuss the most recent craze that has caused chaos in Targets across the nation: the Stanley Tumbler. The Stanley cup is the cool older sister of the Hydro Flask, with more advanced versions of the features that had high-schoolers raving five years ago. The most popular bottle is the Quencher H2.0 FlowState Tumbler, which holds 40 ounces and costs $45, making the product significantly larger and pricier than the other two options. Although more expensive, the Stanley has a better ounce-to-dollar ratio than the S’well or Hydro Flask.

The major appeal of the Stanley Tumbler is its massive handle, flexible straw, and most importantly the limited edition colors in high demand due to social media coverage.

Despite its acclaim among influencers, the Stanley, like any other product, has some cons. The bottle is not very suitable for someone who is constantly on the go, as it has an open straw that can leak easily and doesn’t fit in most cup holders due to its large size. The Stanley is perfect for lounging at home or running errands, but not a great fit for public places like school and work.
