ComedySportz donates their funny to those in need of a smile

A lot can be done with the five dollars it costs to attend a ComedySportz match. ComedySportz manager Jason Boxer realized this and has recently held several benefit matches that divert the excess profits made from ComedySportz matches to other causes.

As long as it’s been a fixture at Mira Costa, the comedic improv group on campus, ComedySportz, has been a popular attraction for students and parents alike who are all too willing to pay the five dollar fee to watch their matches.

“It really doesn’t cost that much for us to have our home matches—we pay the referee and that’s about it— I thought it’d be cool to hold benefits and raise money for things like MBMS’s drama department, which we raised just under $800 for,” Boxer said.

The drama program at Manhattan Beach Middle School, taught by Mr. David Levy, is thriving, but there is a large disparity between the funding for the middle school and that of Mira Costa’s own drama department. For that reason, the ComedySportz team saw fit to donate their profit from one of their matches to the program at the middle school.

“At the risk of hyperbolic platitudinous, I’m truly very glad that the ComedySportz organization and their manager has the oversight to use the money I’m spending to see these talented young men and women in the name of a good cause,” senior Johnny North said.

Another cause that the ComedySportz team has donated to is the renovation of Mira Costa’s auditorium lobby. In a recent match, ComedySportz raised over $1000 for the renovation. The Manhattan Beach Property Owner’s Association provided the bulk of the funding for the renovation but the donation from ComedySportz’s benefit was not overlooked.

Last year, ComedySportz only had one benefit match; the match benefited Partners in Health, an organization that provides relief in third world countries in need. 94% of the funds raised by the match were donated directly to the relief efforts in Haiti after the massive earthquake that rocked the island nation last year.

“We’re hoping to have more benefits in the near future, because ComedySportz matches are very low cost, thus they are great platforms for donating to other causes,” Boxer said.

ComedySportz’s next match will be held on March 25 in room 1.
