Chris and Mike Simms are beer-loving, locally-grown guys who opened a new venue to channel their immense knowledge of beer and wine. Their new pub/restaurant, located at 229 Manhattan Beach Blvd., is a small but friendly place targeted to individuals who are looking for a simple but fresh fare.

All the dishes are intended to be paired with the self-proclaimed “grand beer and wine.” While this is clearly unavailable to us high school students, the food makes Simmzy’s worth a visit.

Complimenting the food are comfortable surroudings. Diners can enjoy the three televisions, broadcasting various sporting events. Although the bar is a focal point for many patrons of the restaurant, Simmzy’s does not have the feel of a sports bar.

The menu offers salads, burgers and homemade desserts ranging in price from $8 to $16. The Simmzy’s Burger is delicious and flavorful but the fries must be purchased separately, so some students might find this combo pricey. Even though the menu is limited, the dishes offered are enticing and served exactly as described on the menu.

The weekend menu has an “Eye Openers” section featuring dishes such as the $10.50 breakfast burrito which contains braised pork, potatoes, pico de gallo, avocado, queso fresco and sour cream.

In addition to the food selections, the menu includes a local “Events-inspired” portion, which includes items related to events such as the old Hometown Fair and Manhattan Beach Farmers’ Market. The menu has a clean and simple layout, which makes it easy to understand what is available. Fun and witty quotes throughout keep you entertained while customers decide what they want to order for their meal.

The restaurant has outdoor seating, so customers can watch the people and cars traveling up and down Manhattan Beach Boulevard, while those who wish for a more intimate experience have the option to dine inside.

The patrons’ ages range from about mid-twenties to mid-thirties. Since the dining is simple, the restaurant is small and cozy, and the music is loud but not loud enough to interfere. People on a first date will find Simmzy’s an ideal place for the exchange of idle conversation without having to yell.

Simmzy’s would not be considered a family-oriented restaurant, but more of a personal dining experience for two to four because the tables are small and the restaurant has the atmosphere and decor of an upscale bar.

Simmzy’s is open until 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and midnight on Friday and Saturday. People looking for a late-night dinner would find Simmzy’s a good alternative to fast-food if they don’t mind the extra cost.

Simmzy’s has both a Twitter and a Facebook page. Patrons can check to stay updated on restaurant news. Members receive VIP offerings and notices of new menu items. Find them at their webpage: www.simmzys.com, where one can read about the menu, events, and the history about how Simmzy’s first got started.
