The Student Government Captains Council is a new council that will be implemented next year to bring all sports at Mira Costa together in an attempt to increase school spirit.

This group will serve as a meeting place for captains of varsity teams to discuss events and games that will occur in each sport. Each varsity sport, during its season, will send its captains to this meeting to share information about upcoming sporting events.

“The goal of the council is to get the Stampede involved in more sports and, overall, increase school spirit,” Student Government President Iktae Park said.

Student Government plans to use the council to increase attendance at meets and games, involvement of the Stampede, and school spirit by further including sports teams in spirit events year-round.

“We are hoping that by getting the sports captains involved that we can generate a greater force of spirit by pinpointing key games and assuring that more sports get more support instead of just a few popular ones,” Vice Principal Paula Spence said.

Student Government also hopes that the council will host pep rallies at the end of every season. This will be held to congratulate the sports teams on their successful seasons and to inform students about the sports that will be starting in the upcoming season.

In addition to the captains of the active sports, the club will consist of the Student Government president and the Stampede coordinator. The captains of cheer leading, dance, and marching band will attend year-round, as they make up the cheer squad.

“I will keep the captains informed about the spirit days that require their participation, the captains will inform others about their events and request Stampede participation, and the Stampede coordinator will accept or decline the request,” Park said.

A preliminary meeting was held June 16 in the Fisher Gym. All captains were invited to attend this meeting to introduce them to the council and prepare them for next year.

The council has not decided on an advisor, a location, or which day the meetings will occur.

“This club is a new thing for student government, as Ms. Spence just approved it in the beginning of June,” Park said.

Student Government representatives hope that athletic teams will take the council seriously and use it effectively to garner support for their sport. If a team captain or replacement does not attend one meeting or does not participate in a spirit event, the team won’t be honored at the end of the season pep rally.

“I am hopeful that this new group will help to increase awareness and support for all of the athletic programs, as well as bring the school together even more,” Spence said.
