Students were caught under the influence of illegal substances and alcohol at this years Prom on Saturday June 5.

The students caught inebriated were found at the gate by security guards who randomly selected students to breathalyze.

“They were breathalyzed, given sobriety tests, and sent home,” Principal Julie Ruisinger said.

It was a similar case for the students caught with illegal substances, which included marijuana and ecstasy.

“It is very apparent when students are under the influence. Their moods go up and down and they act very differently. So we questioned them and sent them home,” Ruisinger said.

Among the consequences for the students who were caught are losing the ability to attend GRAD Nite, not being able to walk at graduation or a five-day suspension.

“When we called the parents they were all really supportive because they wanted to help their kids,” Ruisinger said.

On the same night, students were given their punishments by the vice principals.

“The saddest part about this is the fact that these students are losing so much by making this mistake,” Ruisinger said.

Aside from the substance problems, organizers considered Prom a success.

The theme of Prom was “An Affair to Remember.”

“How our venue looked was definitely our inspiration for our theme,” junior class President Sydney Pratt said.

Many students went straight to the dance floor, which featured a deejay and large screens playing old Hollywood movies.

“The dance floor was a definite highlight of my night at prom. All I did was dance and dance and dance,” freshman Kami Brawer said.

The titles of 2010 Prom king and queen went to seniors Alex Norocea and Shannon Morrissey, respectively.

“I wasn’t expecting it. I’ve had a great senior year and the experience of getting up on stage with my friends at prom was amazing,” said Norocea.

Overall, those who organized “An Affair to Remember” considered it to be a success.

“This year’s prom was the most successful and best I’ve ever been to so far,” said Claypoole.
