On Nov. 9, the Mira Costa boys water polo team proved to be one of the teams to beat in the first round of CIF playoffs. The Mustangs faced off against El Segundo at home and won 10-7, advancing Costa to the second round of CIF with an overall record of 15-14.

The Mustangs came out slow in the first quarter, in which they were unable to put points on the board while El Segundo scored one. The pace picked up in the second but both teams were only limited to three points, making the game a tie going into the half.

Costa and El Segundo traded points back in forth but goals from seniors Justin Pratt and Dylan Colbert kept the Mustangs’ heads above water and ended the third with a positive score of 6-5. The Mustangs broke out in the fourth and final period and defeated El Segundo 10-7.

Pratt and Colbert led the Mustangs with four and three goals respectively.

Costa advances into the second round of CIF on Nov. 12 versus Laguna Beach at home.
