The Mira Costa boys basketball team suffered its first loss after a close game versus Brentwood on Dec. 1 in the Pacific Shores Tournament held at home in the Fisher Gym.

“It was essentially a semifinal game of the tournament against a very good basketball team and we had just as much of a chance to win it as Brentwood did all the way to the end,” head coach Jeff Amaral said.

The Mustangs (2-1) fell just short in the second half, losing to Brentwood 56-55. Junior Kevin Kim led Costa with 18 points, five rebounds and three steals while junior Cole Feaster followed with 13 points. Senior Keith Waddell also added 10 points and seven rebounds.

“The team listened to the game plan and executed it perfectly,” Amaral said. “We identified their two best players and held them way below their season averages.”

Waddell spent the game guarding Brentwood’s big man Leland King and held him to only 12 points. Seniors William Isozaki and Cooper Pugnale limited the production of Brentwood’s point guard Tra Holder with their lockdown defense.

Costa will miss its chance for the finals and instead compete for third place on Dec. 3 versus Culver City at home to finish the tournament.

“We think next time we get in a close game we will be better off because of the experience last night,” Amaral said.
