Mira Costa girls volleyball team played against Marymount on the road on Tuesday September 11. Despite coming from a win against Edison, the Mustangs lost in their third preseason game with the score of 3-0.

The Mustangs kept it close in the beginning of the first set until Marymount broke away to win 17-25. Costa continued to struggle in the second set and the Sailors closed out with a three-set sweep after the Mustangs fell early in the third set with a deficit of six points.

“We should not have let the score get in our heads,” said junior captain Sammy Furlan “We should have played as a whole, not as separate parts.”

Senior Grayce Campbell led the offense with five kills and two aces despite an overall offensive struggle. Sophomore Skylar Caputo and senior Carley Muller each had eight digs with junior Brooke Feld following with a total of seven digs. Despite these numbers Mira Costa failed to keep up with Marymount.

“Marymount keeps a good energy,” said Furlan. “Next game we need to stay together and keep our energy up throughout the game.”

The Mustangs will be travelling to Las Vegas to play in the Durango Classic, considered one of the most competitive tournaments in the nation, as the thirteenth seed. Their first two games on September 14 and 15, will be against Wilson High School from Long Beach and Liberty High School from Bakersfield.
