Girls volleyball defeats the Sea Kings

The Mira Costa girls volleyball team defeated Palos Verdes, 3-1, on Wednesday in its first league game.

During the first set, Costa took an early 6-2 lead. However, Palos Verdes counterd a run of their own making the score, 14-13 in favor of Costa. The game was tied 19-19, before Costa pulled away to win the first set, 25-21.

Palos Verdes came out strong and took a lead with a score of 6-2 in the second set. Costa battled back and to make it 19-18. Costa ended up winning the set, 25-22.

Palos Verdes took a 7-3 lead over Costa to start the third set. The Mustangs once again made a come back and cut the lead to one, making it 15-14. Costa took the lead and made it 20-19. Costa could not hold onto the lead, giving the Sea Kings a win of 25-23.

The Mustangs scored the first four points in the fourth set. Palos Verdes stayed in it and made it 13-10. After that, Costa was able to score making it 20-14 and won the set 25-17.

Seniors libero Brooke Feld had 21 digs, outside hitter Lan Nguyen had 18 kills and 6 digs and setter Sammy Furlan had ten kills, 37 assists and ten digs. Juniors outside hitter Skylar Caputo had 12 kills and 8 digs and middle blocker Katie Rethmeyer contributed to the game with nine kills and two blocks.

“I feel like we played well enough to win. It was not our best match, but that is fairly normal in a season,” coach Lisa Zimmerman said. “I did like the way we responded in the fourth game and closed out the match.”

Costa’s next game is on Thursday, Oct. 10 against West Torrance High School at home.
