The Mira Costa wrestling team defeated Centennial High yesterday with the score of 78-6.The Mustangs won 11 out of their 13 weight classes matches by forfeit which helped them get one step closer to the CIF playoffs.

“Centennial wrestled hard and had some pretty tough guys, but we wrestled harder and came out on top,” senior Kit Murphy said.

Junior Wyatt Wiggins pinned his competitor in the first period at 184 pounds in 27 seconds, which contributed to the Mustangs’ victory.

“Wagging did a great job today and impressed everyone by breaking a new record.” junior Michael Cervantes said.

Centennial was not as prepared for this match, due to the lack of some key players.

“Centennial only had a few players, and although they were tough, it certainly made them less encouraged and decreased their determination which was a penalty point for us,” Cervantes said.

The Mustangs will compete against Redondo Union High School on Thursday at home.

“We are proud to defeat Centennial High today,” coach Jimmy Chaney said. “Our focus now is on winning our last 2 duos and then doing well at CIF.”
