Both boys and girls cross country made the California Interscholastic Federation finals, though neither qualified for State. The boys finished 12th and the girls 9th, ending their seasons at Mt. SAC on Nov. 22.

The boys ran against 16 schools in their Division II qualifying meet. Junior Ethan Williams led the Mustangs, placing 48th with a time of 15:56. For the girls, who also raced against 16 teams, senior Emma Lautanen led the team with a time of 18:35.

“We knew it was going to be hard and that we had to have a good day,” senior Kara Jeong said. “Sadly, we were unable to qualify for states.”

The boys began their season at the Laguna Hills Invitational on Sept 13. The freshmen placed third, the sophomores placed second, the juniors placed sixth and the seniors placed second. The girls placed third in their first Bay League meet of the season, with senior Natasha Brunstein finishing first for Costa and fourth overall.

“As a team, we focused on Redondo because we try to match them evenly for race times,” senior Avery Ward said. “The first race also proved that we were strong and made us optimistic about the rest of the season ahead.”

For the girls team, this is the first time since 2006 that the team did not qualify for the state finals meet.

“Overall I think we did well this season,” freshman Xavier Court said. “It was really fun, and I can’t wait for the next couple of years with the team.”
