In the second round of the division one CIF state tournament the Mustangs beat the Valencia Vikings 3-0. In three game sweep, the Mustangs dominated the beginning matches, while the Vikings struggled to fight back.

In the first game, the Mustangs dominated all aspects of the game. They held a strong lead over the Vikings the entire game. The opposing teams points were mostly from the Mustangs errors, they won 25-10.

“After losing our last game, we made sure to bring a lot of fire and intensity into the following game,” junior libero Sam Jones said. “We came out strong and it paid off.”

After a big run at the end of the first game, the Mustang’s momentum carried into the next match. With a strong lead of the Valencia, their head coach, called a timeout in hopes of slowing Costa down. The Mustangs finished 25-19.

“We did a great job not allowing them back into the game,” junior opposite Jackson Wedbush said. “We dominated them and made sure they had no chance of coming back.”

In the final game, the Vikings pushed back, fighting for their life. The two teams went back and forth, however the Mustang’s run at the end of the game boosted them ahead, 25-23.

“In the third, we had a bit of shaky start, hitting a lot of balls and missing blocks,” Wedbush said. “We gave them a chance to come back, but we were able to finish strong.”

Costa will battle at Loyola in the second round of California Interscholastic Federation state. The teams have played head to head already during the year resulting in the Cubs winning 3-0.

“We need to gear up and get ready for the game against Loyola,” Jones said. “This is gonna be a tough game for us and we really to be at the top of our game.”
