The Mustangs held control of the game by not allowing Trabuco Hills a touchdown until the second half and finished the game, 36-8.

In preparation for the game against defending California Interscholastic Federation champion Trabuco Hills, the team watched films of Trabuco’s previous games to prepare.

“When we watched the videos, we looked for how their linesman reacted and how they react when they are under pressure,” senior cornerback Spencer Gilbert said.

Costa started with the ball and quickly pushed forward into scoring territory with a determined drive to score. As Costa went into a scoring position, junior quarterback David Arredondo scored a touchdown off of a Qb-sneak, bringing the score to 6-0.

“I ran more than I usually do because I have to read the defensive end,” Arredondo said. “The offensive line did a great job of opening up lanes for me and senior Omar Morrison to run the ball up the field.”

To support Costa’s offense, its offensive line has to be prepared every game to play a different defense and must hold the opponents off to give Arredondo and his offense enough time to score. While on the field, they need to work as a unit to stop the rushing defenders trying tackle Arredondo.

“We go to the line, and we recognize the defense,” junior offensive linesman Taylor Frietag said. “We talk out what we need to accomplish that play, and how we are going to do it, we get set, and fire off the ball.”

Going into the second half Costa was winning 13-0, They pushed hard and forced Trabuco Hills to punt the ball after an unsuccessful play. Costa quickly capitalized on their next drive with a long pass by Arredondo to senior Tino Sione for a touchdown.

“We knew we had keep our foot on the gas and continue pressuring them if we wanted to keep our lead,” Arredondo said. “Playing against the defending CIF Champions we knew they were not going to give up.”

Costa’s next game is at Mira Costa on Friday against West Torrance, 2-1, with wins against Culver City High School and Inglewood High School.

“This week we are practicing to play against West who run one of the fastest offenses we will see this Season,” Coach Don Morrow said. “We need to be quick on defense and have been practicing with a quick pace every day.”
