Former Mira Costa English teacher John Heideman passed away last night at 10:15 p.m. after a five-year battle against stage four prostate cancer, metastatic cancer of the bones and tumors in his liver.

At the end of the last school year, Heideman retired.  To commemorate his 39-year teaching career at Costa, seniors Dillon Patel, Noelle Thomas, and Luke Jelmini organized a surprise event for Heideman on April 30 of last year.  The event featured numerous students and faculty members, wearing shirts with the phrase, “Keep Calm and Fight On” on the front and “Heideman” on the back, to signify their support for Heideman.
“The biggest thing my family wants to say is just how much Mira Costa meant to my dad,” Heideman’s daughter, Christa Heideman, said. “Thank you Costa for you love and support.”
