Mira Costa’s Wrestling beat Peninsula 45-21 at Peninsula High School on Wednesday, with Costa pinning the majority of its wins. Many of Costa’s older wrestlers are continuing to win and the younger players are starting to improve and win their matches.

Junior Joe Gebele defeated his opponent 4-3 in a long grueling match against his opponent despite not fully pinning him. According to Gebele, his match was difficult to win but in the end, it contributed to Costa’s win.

“The man I wrestled was a good wrestler, but I was able to take him down a few times and I scored a few escape points,” Gebele said. “It was one of the tougher matches I’ve had this year.”

Costa’s next match is a tournament in Morro Bay High School against 64 other schools on Friday and Saturday. Costa is also getting close to CIF playoffs and is doing well for their preparation to play the rest of their league games. According to coach Jimmy Chaney the team is a great position right now to finish off the rest of the season strong.

“We knocked off Peninsula today which should secure us the league championship and a #2 ranking in CIF, behind Shadow Hills,” Chaney said. “I’ll look forward to seeing how we will be ranked. We still have to wrestle Beverly Hills and Redondo, before CIF. ”
