Girls lacrosse pulls off an impressive win against the El Segundo Eagles on March 23, in a home game. The Mustangs won by a score of 15-5, continuing their two game winning streak.

The Mustangs struggled early in the first half by losing the first face off and letting El Segundo score off of a fast break, but came back with an offensive run with two goals scored by junior midfielder Rachel Glozman and sophomore midfielder Charlie Manley.

“Our offensive movement in the first half exceeded the levels we have reached in the past tremendously,” said senior midfielder Kayla Sugimoto.

The Mustangs continued to dominate on both sides of the field throughout the first half.  Manley, Sugimoto, sophomore midfielder Julia Nuttall-Smith, and junior midfielder Kay Schickler scored six more goals. By the end of the first half, the Mustangs had a 4 point lead against the Eagles, 7-3.

“We played well and really took advantage of the opportunities we were given that led us to good plays,” said Manley.

The Mustangs started off the second half by scoring three goals within the first ten minutes. Senior defender Allie Keasler started from Costa’s defense and worked the ball up the field, scoring her first goal of the game.

“In the second half, we worked to get every player involved resulting in a lot of goals and assists, allowing us to hold on and expand our lead,” said Sugimoto.

At the start of the second half, Costa allowed three goals as the Eagles’ fast breaks were able to break through the defense. In the last 5 minutes of the game, Costa allowed the Eagles to score two more goals. The defense prevailed and stopped the Eagles from gaining more goals, finishing the game 15-5.

“Our defense played high pressure forcing many turnovers, that gave our offense more scoring opportunities,” said Keasler.

The Mustangs are currently overall 6-5 overall. The team’s next game was yesterday against Peninsula but the results were not available at the time of publication.
“We have some great competition coming up in Bay League,” said Sugimoto. “We need to keep up our momentum and continue perfecting our game, and hopefully we’ll be able to get a win against our biggest rivals.”
