The closer, the anchor, the sweeper, the clincher: these are terms that describe veteran golfers. However, with just one glance at her awe-inspiring swing and efficient putting these words describe freshman Megan Kim.

Freshman varsity golfer Kim has established herself as Mira Costa’s top performer, helping the team achieve an 8-0 record. Kim has made great strides in what will surely become a great high school career.

“The first time I stepped on a golf course four years ago, I had no intentions of pursuing it seriously. However, I found that the more I practiced, the better I became,” Kim said.

Kim began taking golf seriously about two years ago. She went from being an average local player with little tournament experience to a junior ranked 48th internationally within her age division.

“I try to ignore most statistics, even though it helps compare myself to other girls in my category. I want to go as far as I can in the golf world, but things take time. I need to mature a lot between my freshman and senior years,” Kim said.

While Kim’s premium talent helps her win tournaments, her mentor gives her an edge over opponents.

“I would not have been as successful a golfer without my brother David. Not only is he is a great player, but he is constantly giving me tips to improve my game. He motivates me to practice harder to achieve my maximum potential,” Kim said.

Kim knows that motivation is extremely important. She keeps a Stanford University pen with her during all golf matches because she dreams of playing Division 1 golf there. She hopes to play professionally after college, and the pen serves as a reminder to be poised and positive.

“Megan has a presence on the golf course unlike anyone I have met before.  You can never tell when she is nervous, and she always helps the team in key moments. Most importantly, she is humble and is without a doubt one of our most valuable players,” team captain Chari Noddings said.

Like a closer or a sweeper, it is essential in golf to put the ball in the cup.  Kim excels with her putting skills.

“She finds a way to win, and she does it consistently, in dramatic fashion. Fans that come out to support the team develop a true appreciation for the suspense and excitement experienced when Costa’s top golfers sink difficult puts to close out a match,” head coach Jim Hands said.
