Mira Costa’s Associated Student Body will be holding the annual freshmen elections on Wednesday, where the freshmen class will get to vote on their class President, Vice President and Treasurer.

During second period, ASB will send a ballot to each freshmen homeroom class and the freshmen will vote one candidate for each of the three categories.  The results of the election will be announced on Thursday through the loud-speaker.

“All freshmen will vote in their second period class for all of the three categories and whoever gets a plurality of the votes wins the election,” ASB teacher Lisa Claypoole said.  “Those three winners’ schedules will change, placing them in ASB.”

These elections are held at the beginning of this school year because freshmen did not have a chance to participate in the elections among incoming sophomores, juniors, and seniors that occurred at the end of the previous school year due to the fact that they were still in middle school.

“I would say freshmen elections are a lot calmer because it’s just one grade level that is running for an ASB official position, whereas in May it’s all grade levels and there’s a lot more positions that need to be filled,” ASB Head of Elections and senior Tracy Thompson said.  “We are a lot busier and more hectic at that time then we are during freshmen elections.”

Freshmen have already begun to prepare for their campaigns to gain their classmates’ votes and posters will be up on Wednesday, one week before the elections.  Campaigning includes making big, vibrant signs, handing out candy to classmates, and making t-shirts.

“I’m going to make a lot of t-shirts and signs, and I’m just gonna maybe pass out food for a couple of days and talk to a lot of people to gain their support in voting for me,” Freshmen Ambria Benson said.  “I think it will be a rough competition because I know a lot of the people running against me and they are very well-liked.”

According to ASB, the elections are held in order to give freshmen a chance to gain experience in organizing all the school activities with the ASB program.  Furthermore, the elections bring more spirit and enthusiasm towards Mira Costa.

“We offer freshmen the opportunity to join student government but unfortunately we only have a few positions available for freshmen,” Claypoole said. “It’s really rewarding for a student to be in student council for all four years.”
