Mira Costa’s girls soccer team was defeated by Palos Verdes High School 3-1 away in the team’s first Bay League game. The Mustangs held a 1-0 lead at the half but were unable to sustain it.

An early goal from senior forward Delaney Whittet allowed the Mustangs to keep their composure, at least until halftime, junior midfielder Genevieve Watkins said. Within the last 20 minutes of the game, the Mustangs blew their one goal lead, allowing the Sea Kings to tally on three of its own.

“We were playing very well in the first half, but it all went downhill once they scored the tying goal, shifting the momentum,” Watkins said. “We really needed to keep our composure once we gave up that first goal, considering that once they scored the first one, they began to dominate the game.”

The Mustangs, now 9-2 overall and 0-1 in Bay League, are set to play Inglewood High School on Tuesday at home. Watkins says that as long as the team can forget about the result against Palos Verdes, they should win handily on Tuesday.

“I’m very confident in our ability to bounce back after a rough result,” Watkins said. “We have been playing well all season and if we can carry over some of our momentum from those games, we’ll come away with a win.”
