The Mira Costa girls basketball team (4-1) lost to Maranatha in the finals of the Inglewood Tournament on Dec. 4 at St. Mary’s Academy.

Senior co-captain Kylie Nakamine led the team with 16 points, six steals, and five assists. Nakamine’s improved perimeter shooting and aggressive play kept Costa in the game.

“Kylie has really put it upon herself to improve. By shooting hundreds of baskets a day and putting in the hours in the weight room, she has become a leader by example,” junior shooting guard Mackenzie Austin said.

Senior center Joelle Herron also corralled nine rebounds and shot 44 percent from the field.

The Mustangs will kick off their first Bay League game against Peninsula on Jan. 11 in Fisher Gym.

“When we play Peninsula, what happens happens. Hopefully, we will be successful because I feel we’ve had a great start,” Austin said.
