“We had a depleted squad this game,” Coach Bryan Mark said. “The group that was here put a very hard effort into the game and we are very proud of them but unfortunately we fell to a team we beat previously.”

The Torrance Tartars scored their first goal early in the game, putting them up, 1-0.  Freshman forward Ethan Light brought the game to a tie with a goal. The final score of the first period ended 3-1, with the Mustangs trailing.

“In the first period we got down on ourselves pretty early because Torrance had scored a couple goals pretty fast but once we scored that first goal it had gave us some hope,” senior defender Maria Meola said. “I think we need to play better defensively, believe in ourselves more and work better as a team.”

In the second period, the Mustangs remained scoreless throughout the entire period. Costa’s defensive line was broken by the Tartar’s offense and Torrance was able to score four times, increasing its lead to 7-1 at the end of the second period.

“I think we need to be stronger by breaking up the play in the neutral zone and putting pressure in that zone so the opposing teams cannot get an easy entry into our defensive zone,” Mark said.

A few seconds after the second period intermission, senior forward Bryce Tournat had scored a goal bringing the score to a 8-2. In the dying minute of the game, Tournat managed to score again to bring the game to a final score of 10-3, in favor of Torrance.

“We made some great passes and I was able to get a few lucky bounces which helped me get a few breakaways and score,” Tournat said. “Our team had a rough game but we played very well overall upfront.”

The Mira Costa hockey team is 1-3-1 overall and will face off against El Segundo High School at the Toyota Sports Center on Friday. The team will have to focus on its defense in order to win their next game, Mark said.

“Our goal is to cut down the amount of goals we have against us and to score more goals than the other team,” Coach Trevor Oystrick said. “We have to play better in our defensive zone and throw more pucks at the net in order to generate more opportunities for goals.”
