Costa students signed up for the annual Scholar Quiz competition on Feb. 7 using a new online registration system.

Scholar Quiz is a six day single elimination tournament in which teams of four students compete in Costa classrooms during lunch. The new registration system consisted of an online form that opened at 6 a.m. and students signed up on a first come first serve basis. Students in all grades were able to sign up, but only 64 teams had a guaranteed spot.

“The change in the registration process was actually easier since I didn’t have to physically go to school and was easier for me to do it digitally,” sophomore Jonas Lee said.

Mira Costa’s Parent Teacher Student Association is an organization led by parents that help fund programs that benefit students at Costa like Scholar Quiz. The PTSA decided to have an online registration in January at a PTSA Board meeting for Scholar Quiz which has been at Costa for about 30 years.

“Since so many sign-ups are online these days, the Mira Costa PTSA felt it was time to get up with the times for the Scholar Quiz,” Costa PTSA Co-President Dolly Boden said. “The online form was simple to create [and] the registration process was streamlined.”

In previous years at Costa, the registration took place at 6:45 am in the auditorium at Costa on a first come first serve basis. Students had to go to school earlier in the day to sign up and that caused stress, Boden said.

“We feel it was more efficient and easier for kids to sign up from home before school and not make it so stressful getting to school early and lining up to do so,” Boden said.

Team captains signed their teams up using the new online system, eliminating past issues of illegible entries and misspelled names, Boden said. Each submissions had a time-stamp, so there was less miscommunication about when a form was turned in, Boden said.

“It was definitely more efficient to make an online form because there was no line and it went faster than the regular registration,” sophomore Matt Janson said “I prefer the online registration overall since it went faster and was easier.”

Teachers were also able to sign up their classroom for Scholar Quiz to use during lunch using a different form available on Costa’s website. Parents also signed up to become scorers, readers or flag judges  to fill the 100 volunteers needed for Scholar Quiz, which will take place from March 13-21.

“I am super excited for Scholar Quiz because it’s a really enjoyable school activity that I have done since sixth grade,” Lee said. “I do it more for fun rather than to actually compete, and it’s even better when you do it with some of your best friends.”
