Mira Costa boys beach volleyball won its third consecutive title as Interscholastic Beach Volleyball League Champions in the league’s four-year history on Oct. 6 in Santa Monica.

Each team had won in two matches. In the quarter finals the team played against Windward, in the semifinals Costa competed against San Marcos, and in the finals, the team competed against Redondo Union for the championship.

“Finishing the season with a win was very good for the team and a very cool experience for me and my teammates,” sophomore Ben Coordt said.

Costa played in three teams of two against three opposing teams. The number one team was made up by junior Jack Walmer and Coordt, who won 21-17 and 21-12. The number two team was senior Thomas Kretschmer and junior Chase Coppedge, who won 21-18 21-15. The number three team included junior Jack Hopkins and senior Adam Sevier, who forfeited the last match after only needing to win two out of three matches to win the championships.

“Coming in we knew we had a very good chance at winning if we played well and together,” Coordt said. “I played well with Jack Walmer and we won all our matches in 2 games.”

The team finished the season ranked first in the Bay League and undefeated. The team plans to keep up their practice at the beach and win CIF indoor championships this coming year, according to senior Will Bond.

“Overall as a team, we played well and it was awesome to get the third championship in a row,” Bond said. “It was an effective win as a whole especially because all of us are indoor players. Our coaches did a good job with us throughout the year to get us prepared to win.”
