Netflix’s newest original series, “Fate: the Winx Saga,” maintains an investing and constant plot as well as intriguing characters that easily grab the attention of its viewers.

Comprised of a total of six episodes, “Fate: the Winx Saga” begins by introducing all of the characters and their backgrounds. The audience learns about the main character, Bloom, and her past, as well as her roommates. Bloom, played by Abigail Cowen, gets curious about her birth parents and takes her roommates on an adventure in finding the truth about who she is and how to control her newfound magic.

Released to Netflix on Jan. 22, the series’ six episodes are directed by Brian Young. The main cast is composed of Bloom; Sky, played by Danny Griffin; Musa, played by Elisha Applebaum; and Stella, played by Hannah Van der Westhuysen.

One of the key elements to the show’s success is its exceptional script. The storytelling and romance that it cultivates successfully develops the show’s entertainment value throughout each episode. The complex and realistic understanding of each character that the script lays out is an impactful part of the show’s overall entertainment value.

The show’s greatest strength is the performance from Cowen. Her acting is phenomenal, as she depicts the character in such detail that it gives her 16-year-old character importance regardless of the current state of the plot. Cowen carries the show exceptionally and illustrates a perfect example of what a main character should look like.

The main plot point that drives the show’s storyline is the idea of the constant unknown. Through each episode, Bloom is constantly looking for a new unknown through romance, family values, new environments and her magic. This element, beside Cowen’s acting, completely drives the excitement in the drama of the show and keeps the audience captivated and wanting more.

Despite all of these strengths, the show falls short with the uncertainty of the ending. A new character is introduced in the final two episodes and leaves confusion within the audience. This new character disturbs the setting greatly toward the end of the series, leaving a lack of understanding of the later plot and in consequence confusing much of what happened at the beginning of the story. Many questions were left in the air, leaving the audience without any satisfying closure, which could be rectified by a second season.

Similarly, the show’s tendency to constantly have new climaxes can be somewhat hard to follow as well. At points in the show, there were many changes of events that caused much confusion, an example being when the protagonist and the antagonist join forces. Scenes like these help keep the show interesting but can add in a distracting factor if they are not fully executed properly.

“Fate: the Winx Saga” skillfully maintains great acting and a plot that takes the audience on a dramatic journey. The fantasy aspects of the series are utilized as a perfect escapism for the viewer, and this superpower enables the show’s few negative aspects and elements of confusion to be easily overlooked. Viewers looking for a quick-paced show will find success sprinkled well in “Fate: A Winx Saga.”

Released on Jan. 22, “Fate: the Winx Saga” is available to stream on Netflix and is rated TV-MA.
