Senior Haily Huynh spends her free time giving children tennis lessons at the Costa courts, teaching them her best tennis tips and tricks.

Huynh has been on the Costa varsity girls tennis team since her freshman year, including being the team captain her senior year. She started coaching her junior year, and since then she has helped young players from the age of eight to 14. She teaches them the basic skills, rules and plays of the sport.

“After all of the years of playing tennis, I decided to share what I’ve learned and take on coaching,” Huynh said. “This sport has taught me so much not only on the court, but also so many things off the court.”

Hunyh has been playing tennis since she was five and, according to Huynh, her dad, Tom Huynh, has helped her the most with her tennis career and has been her biggest mentor. She has been training with her dad since she began playing.

“My dad has helped me a lot with my tennis skills,” Huynh said. “We have hit together multiple times a week since the beginning of my tennis career.”

According to Huynh, coaching has only slightly affected her tennis career, but she has often found herself criticizing herself much more while playing.

“I love coaching the kids because I see them improve and enjoy tennis more because of me,” Huynh said. “I love to help as much as I can and use my knowledge of tennis to help.”

Huynh committed to play Division 1 tennis at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) in July.

According to Huynh, she is excited to continue her education and to both improve in her tennis career and meet her teammates at UCI.

“I can’t wait to meet new people and become part of a team again,” Huynh said. “I love being on a team, and I know that traveling with my team will be so much fun.”
