“We actually need to hit more so that our pitchers aren’t throwing a lot of extra pitches,” said varsity head coach Ted Mureau. “Hitting improves all aspects of our game.”

Junior pitcher Heather Ross threw 88 pitches and had three strikeouts as she kept the game close for the first four innings.

“I think it was a good battle up until the end,” Roth said. “We [definitely] fought hard. We need to work on a few of our fielding [errors] and we need to figure out a way to get our hits together.”

Roth threw two strikeouts to open the game for the Mustangs, but two errors from the Costa defense cost the Mustangs a 1-0 deficit heading into the bottom of the first inning. Costa attempted to come back early, but with runners on second and third, Costa was not able to get out of it.

Roth threw another strikeout to get the Mustangs to the bottom of the second and was able to maintain a no hitter, but the Mustangs still were not able to score any runs.

“We got beat by a really really good team,” Meuru said. “They are both nationally ranked and highly ranked in CIF.”

During the third inning, Roth gave up her first hit to the first batter she saw, and later gave up a shallow pop fly that was able to fall into center field. The next batter hit a pop-up into shallow right field. Going into the bottom of the third, Torrance elevated their lead by two and was up 3-0. Costa was unable to match, and by the end of the third Torrance maintained their three run lead.

“Honestly I was really worried going into this game,” senior fielder Amanda Siegel said. “They were probably the best team we’ve ever faced.”

The Mustangs kept Torrance quiet in the fourth, and Ross held the batters. Costa, however, failed to narrow the deficit and with three innings remaining the team remained scoreless.

During the fifth inning, Torrance continued hitting the ball, lengthening its lead to six runs. Going into the bottom of the fifth inning, Torrance led Costa 12-0. Costa was unable to come back, and the game ended 12-0 in favor of Torrance High School.

“It’s tough when your pitching is good and plays are not being made behind you,” Mureau said. “It’s never easy for a pitcher [in that situation].”

he Mustangs’ record now stands at three wins and six losses. The Mustangs’ next game took place yesterday at 3:15, where they faced off against Valley Christian High School at home. The results of this game were not available at the time.

“We are going to work on our hitting,” said Coach Mureau. “Hitting is the key to winning. If we can hit, it makes everybody play better.”
