After emerging with a winning tournament record at Durango High School, the Mira Costa girls volleyball team faced a team that would prove to be a challenge to the young Mustangs.

On Tuesday, the girls volleyball team suffered a disappointing loss to Los Alamitos High School. Although all three games were closely contested, Costa could not win any of the three games.

“We need to take care of the ball in better ways,” coach Lisa Zimmerman said. “We definitely have to do some more work on our ball control and team energy throughout the whole game.”

Costa’s record now stands at 4-5, and they seek to bring their record back to .500 against their next opponant Marymount last night. However, the results of the game were not available at the time of publication.

In the first game against Los Alamitos, the Mustangs started with a promising lead and fought hard to keep the score in their favor. Senior Katie Warshaw led Costa with multiple digs, which helped the Mustangs stay strong. The team maintained long rallies with Los Alamitos and had many close saves and dives.

However, the Mustangs suffered from several miscommunications and narrowly missed several chances at scoring. Costa was unable to recover from the deficit, and Los Alamitos ended the match with a score of 25-23.

“We need to stop the other team from going on long winning sprees,” Zimmerman said.

Throughout the second game, Costa and Los Alamitos’ remained within four points of each other. However, Costa players narrowly missed the ball many times and were hurt multiple times by hitting the ball out of play toward the end of the match.

“Our team came out really strong and fought,” Zimmerman said. “But after Los Alamitos took the lead and momentum, we fell back and ultimately couldn’t catch up.”

Despite Mira Costa’s diligent efforts to make a comeback, Los Alamitos fought hard and managed to hold a lead throughout the game, winning 25-22.

“We needed a lot more energy during the game,” junior Carly Muller said.

In the third game, Mira Costa’s fate was sealed when the Mustangs were unable to mount a comeback, even though Los Alamitos opened the door by committing 10 unforced errors in the third set.

“We should have fought harder when the other team gained a lead on us,” Muller said.

The Mustangs were unable to overcome their large deficit and were defeated in the third and final game, 25-15.

“We needed to have more fight in us,” said senior captain Maddy Klineman. “We also needed more fire in general to fuel our aggressive gameplan.”

Despite the loss, several of the Mustangs stood out and aided the team in gaining points. Junior Grace Campbell managed 10 kills and was followed by Klineman, who had nine.

“We were a little outmatched tonight, and they played us harder than any opponant thus far this season,” Zimmerman said.
